Where Does Your Quilting Lead You?

Lizard Tails

Where does your quilting lead you? Do you follow the flow by quilting along the design of the fabric? Do you stitch in the ditch? Do you meander across the quilt just hoping to get done?

There are so many options and each quilt is another opportunity to try a new approach. In Lizard Tails, I ignored the fabric design and the block piecing and quilted flowing lines across the entire quilt top. It was a liberating experience not to feel constrained by the pattern of the quilt.

I used a variegated thread that changed from chartreuse to orange, a perfect choice. How did Signature Threads know exactly what I would need?

These quilting lines only led to more opportunities for additional details. Hand embroidery added texture to the open spaces between the machine quilting.

Quilter's Tile

Quilter's Tile
8" x 8"
Sharon V. Rotz

On these hot summer days, I've found it is a perfect time to work on smaller projects. These smaller quilts, which I call Quilter's Tiles, are wonderful to try new techniques in a fast and easy way.

I previously dyed this piece of fabric using a resist to block out some areas. On one hot day, I found a bit of shade and relaxed and was ready to draw on my dyed square. I pressed a square of freezer paper on the back to stiffen the fabric. It took a bit of courage to uncap my Sharpie permanent marker and start to draw. I'm not the best artist and didn't have a plan.

I found it did seem less intimidating to draw on the fabric since it already had color on it, no blank canvas. I was surprised and pleased with the result. I layered my little quilt and and stitched on the drawn lines to quilt it. Fused binding finished it up.
